Athens’ first black police chief, Joseph “Jack” Lumpkin, and first black female judge, Patricia Barron, will be honored at the 2018 Michael L. Thurmond Lecture Series and Black History Celebration Saturday at the Morton Theatre. Admission is free.
Delivering the lecture is University of Virginia Professor Derrick P. Alridge, whose primary areas of scholarship are African-American educational and intellectual history. A native Athenian, Thurmond is currently chief executive officer of DeKalb County. The event is sponsored by the Athens Area Black History Committee and the UGA history department. A reception follows at First AME Church fellowship hall, 521 N. Hull St.
