Athens Fashion Collective presented “Fashion Inspired by the Art of Piero Lerda” at this entertaining evening the museum puts on three times a year. Eight local designers showcased an original fashion piece created in response to the work of the dynamic Italian painter Lerda, whose abstract and colorful mixed media works are currently on display at the Georgia Museum of Art.
“My favorite animal is the raven,” Amanda Scheutzow replied to a question about her work Thursday night at the opening for “The Finders” at the Gallery @ Hotel Indigo. To some, "the raven is viewed as a creator." The young, Paintbox yellow-haired artist was leading a jewelry class, which she assists instructor Sylvia Dawe with at the Lyndon House, through the exhibit. The MFA candidate spoke enthusiastically about the materials and the symbolism within her work. Her pieces feature silhouettes of ravens, roots and branches that are constructed of copper, brass and silver; typically, they surround and nestle found Victorian-era photos.

My interest was piqued as I approached the house, a seemingly unspoiled midcentury classic, thoughtfully sited atop a gentle hill somewhere between Five Points and Beechwood. But what really sealed the deal was what was parked in front: a bitchin' metallic gold vintage Volvo. I could tell this was going to be fun.
The home, built in 1952 for the Blumberg & Loef family, now belongs to Didi Dunphy and her husband, artist Jim Barsness. Dunphy is an energetic artist and designer who somehow also finds the time to be the Program Supervisor of the Lyndon House Arts Center and curator of the Gallery@Hotel Indigo-Athens. She generously opened her home and studio to the public on Saturday, Mar. 21 as part of WUGA's fundraising series, Artists in Residence.
The bells kept ringing at the Lyndon House on Thursday night. “Are they making an announcement?” one woman asked me. Nothing ensued, and we were all easily pulled back into our animated conversations. The bells rang again. Eventually the noise of the crowd drowned the ringing out entirely, as hundreds had gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Lyndon House Art Center’s Juried Exhibition.
