  • Big Ears Festival in Review

Last weekend while Slingshot was slinging its thing to Athens, its big sister, Big Ears, was conducting its fifth incarnation up in Knoxville, TN. This transcendent, semi-annual event consistently offers one of America's premiere gatherings of the musical avant-garde. 2016 was no different in this respect and the fest exceeded its precedent by continuing to expand the diversity of its programming. Each Tuesday, I drive around delivering this humble rag and I pick out a handful of mixes to listen to on my way. On Wednesday, I'll post them here. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad. Sometimes they're new, sometimes they're old, but these are the ones that get me rollin' on that route.

In part three, the stylistic threads between artists are a little more stretched while the cultural ones run a little tighter. These artists bring a powerful and refreshing sense of international queer culture to their work. That said, the content isn't niche or constrained by that quality. The tracks released by these men are elite examples of the genres they work in and most of them are forging entirely new hybrids of their own. Here you'll find some of the most creative variations on dancehall, ballroom, vogue, house, rap, cumbia and anything in between.

Check the list after the jump.

Part 2 of our Cloud series will cover artists who work or have worked with Chicago Footwork. Footwork, a dance genre born of ghetto house, has been sweeping the globe for a few years now and is one of the most aurally exciting new forms out there. (Check out our previous feature here.) These artists don't work exclusively in footwork and a few notables who don't post often were left out for that reason.

Ciara's "Body Party," based on Ghost Town DJ's 1996 juicy jammer "My Boo," was one of the best tracks of last year, no matter how you heard it—and it came a lot of ways. These were my five favorite takes on the euphoric, Grammy-ineligible record.

Resolutions: practice, patience, focus, absorption, fitness, witness. To start off this new year, .ext is going to pick up right where it left off—a full year ago. In the interest of moving forward, I'm going to share some things from the past that are worth bringing into the future.

Our first list is a series of SoundCloud accounts worth following. I'm not trying to advertise for the site; obviously there are many, many ways to find new work, but this one has been the most fruitful and fulfilling for me over the past few years. Accounts are free, and even if you aren't uploading, you can follow artists and their new uploads will be organized into a dashboard for you. It's a great way to engage with exciting creators at every point in their process.
