Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers

Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, out in the Epps Bridge area next to McDonald's, is offering single-scoop cones and dishes of its vanilla and chocolate "custard" (i.e. ice cream) for $1 today. Half of that dollar will go to benefit either Kids in Need Foundation (which distributes school supplies to kids who need them) or Playworks (which provides full-time recess coaches to schools). You can vote for the charity you prefer by texting the word "kids" for Kids in Need or the word "recess" for Playworks to 72727.

The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia will have several upcoming percentage nights to benefit its Mobile School Food Pantry Program: Aug. 11 from 5–9 p.m. at Chipotle; Aug. 17 lunch and dinner at The National; Aug. 25 lunch and dinner at Heirloom Cafe; and Aug. 30 for lunch at Marti's at Midday. The Mobile School Pantry brings free fresh produce (donated by the garden at the West Broad Farmers Market and Collective Harvest) to schools (Oglethorpe County Primary School, Alps Road Elementary School and South Jackson Elementary School) once a month.

East Side Eats, sort of a smaller scale Taste of Athens designed to focus on Athens' Eastside, will take place Aug. 21 from 5–7 p.m. in the YWCO gym on Research Drive. Restaurants currently signed up to participate include Barberitos, Beef O' Brady’s, Butt Hutt, Chick-Fil-A, Craft Public House, DePalma’s, Edible Arrangements, Fatz Café, Firehouse Subs, Inoko Sushi Express, Jimmy John's, Johnny’s Pizza, Keba, Locos, Mama’s Boy, Mannaweenta, Siri Thai, Sweetie Pie by Savie, Trump's Catering, Wok Star and Zaxby’s. Tickets are $15 a head or four for $50, either at the door or ahead of time at the YWCO or at Athens First Bank & Trust on Barnett Shoals. Children under 5 years old are free.

The Classic City BBQ Festival, now in its fourth year, will take place Aug. 20 at the Classic Center, starting at 11 a.m. The festival is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and is an official Georgia BBQ Championship 2016 Tour Event. “Whole Hog” tickets get you six samples of barbecue and 10 craft beer samples for $25, plus access to food vendors and more; “Half Rack” tickets are only $10 but don't include the beer; "Piglet" tickets for children are $5 (and don't include beer either). Food vendors include Cabin Creek BBQ, 41 and Main Restaurant, Buffalo’s Café, Mini-Melts Ice Cream, King of Pops and Lil Ice Cream Dude. There are three different barbecue competitions going on that day, plus a kids' zone (bounce houses, etc.), an a.m. fun run, a barbecue trade show, a carnival-game area and live music. Do not expect to drive down Foundry Street that day. Many details are available at classiccitybbqfest.com.
