The itty-bitty building on Whitehall Road that was most recently Rooter's has turned over a number of times in recent years, but it never sits vacant for long, despite the fact that zoning doesn't allow for sit-down service. Next up is Sweetie Pie by Savie, a custom and walk-up bakery that hasn't had its own space in Athens yet but has built a reputation for impressive work with fondant.
Sweetie Pie owner Savie Rochanasmita Arnold confirmed that she plans to be open within a couple of months, and that "folks will be able to stop by in the morning until afternoon and grab a cup of coffee/tea with some muffin/scone/etc."
Downtown board game cafe The Rook and Pawn has eight days to go on a Kickstarter for which it's already reached its main goal. There are stretch goals left, however, with fancy prizes for pledgers. The money will go to building the board game library and funding educational initiatives. Also, there's a big FAQ up on the new website, so if you have questions, they are most likely answered.
The Pita Pit, on Jackson Street downtown, is up for sale.
The Pine has added a Taco Tuesday, with three tacos (changing regularly, but the first iteration included carne asada with salsa verde and cotija; pork al pastor with charred pineapple, Vidalia onion and cilantro; and shrimp with roasted corn salsa), plus $1 off Terrapin beers at lunch or dinner.
