It's true: Everyone's favorite homophobic-yet-delicious fast-food chicken chain is coming to downtown Athens.
Rumors that Chick-Fil-A would move into the prime space at the corner of Broad Street and College Avenue most recently occupied by Washington, D.C.-based burger chain Five Guys have been confirmed by documents filed with the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department.
The building is in the downtown historic district, and Chick-Fil-A has applied for permission to make changes to the facade:
The proposed work intends to replace the existing Five Guys Restaurant at 101 College Avenue with a Chick-Fil-A restaurant. The Chick-Fil-A restaurant will primarily serve walk-up customers, but will also include limited outdoor/indoor seating in the restaurant and outdoor seating along the sidewalk. The building renovation will include replacing the façade openings with historically appropriate dark brown wood framed operable storefront and glazing.
The Historic Preservation Commission will consider the request at its Jan. 17 meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Dougherty Street government building. However, be aware that the HPC can only consider the historic appropriateness of the facade changes, not whether the business is local or this particular applicant is too Jesus-y for downtown Athens, as many have already said on social media.
