Gymnopédie to close, Pulaski Heights BBQ coming up
It's not surprising, given its owner's exacting vision and its theoretically limited appeal, but it is unfortunate that Gymnopédie, the tiny jewel of an almost entirely vegan restaurant based in the Leathers Building and seating a mere handful of folks at a time, is closing. You have until July 1 (i.e., this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.) to experience its remarkableness. Here's the menu for the last week:
Pickle plate - assorted local goodies 4.
Cucumber gazpacho 4./6.
Local lettuces with scallion, shiitake, and a white wine vinaigrette 7.
Summer squash casserole served with a shaved celery-date salad, fresh tomatoes, and a tarragon-lemon emulsion 16.
Garden lasagna. Local tomatoes, shaved zucchini ribbons, basil-pine nut pesto, rich tomato sauce and cashew ricotta 16.
Cocoa cola: our house-made chocolate marshmallow foam 6.
A warm pineapple crumble served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream 6. (you can have it without the crumble too, gluten free).

Not taking its place but opening in the same building, which is down Pulaski Street by the railroad tracks, will be Pulaski Heights BBQ, from Chuck Ramsey (ex-Five & Ten). It'll most likely be a couple of months before the restaurant is open, but it could be sooner if fate is in a smiley mood. Ramsey's BBQ has always been one of the best secrets in Athens, never available commercially but only through the grace of making his acquaintance, and the promise of being able to get it regularly is mouthwatering. What else? Here's what he said: "Full bar. Pulled pork, ribs, chicken, brisket. Daily specials along the lines of Korean-style short ribs, al pastor-style pork shoulder, house-cured pastrami and kraut, tandoori-style chicken, lots o' vegetarian sides, salads, Southern oysters, snacks." Yum.
