This Wednesday, Oct. 15 is the annual Eat Local for Life percentage night, which benefits AIDS Athens. Participating restaurants and bars are: Barberitos (Eastside and Five Points; dinner only), Big City Bread, Cinco y Diez, Copper Creek Brewing Company (dinner only), George's Lowcountry Table (dinner only), The Globe (dinner only), The Grit, Heirloom Cafe, Last Resort Grill, The National, South Kitchen and Bar (lunch only), Taqueria del Sol, Ted's Most Best, Trappeze (lunch only), Viva Argentine and Your Pie (Lumpkin Street).
On Saturday, Rooter's Grocery and Barbecue, on Whitehall Road, is holding a hot pepper contest and seed swap.
Freshtopia, on Gaines School Road, is holding a grand opening party Sunday, Oct. 19, with the chance to win a trip for two to Berlin. For details, see its Facebook page.
Also on Sunday, Menchie's on the Eastside will hold a "Thank You Day," with BOGO froyo, balloon animals, face painting, coloring, Mike "Big Dawg" Woods, photo ops with its creepy yogurt mascot and music.
And that evening, at 6 p.m., home.made will host a dinner with Ethel Collins from the Athens Land Trust garden. You can look forward to sweet potato pie, steak, Ashley Farms chicken, collards, eggplant, fried green tomatoes and more, all for $30. Call 706.206.9216 to reserve a seat. (Read Flagpole's recent profile on Collins here.)
Go ahead and mark your calendar, too, for Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m., at Cine, when Taste of Athens will hold a launch party. The venerable benefit, which provides a good portion of Community Connection's funding, is entering its 22nd year and making some changes to be more chef-driven (e.g., a fancy cocktail contest). The party will feature snacks by Seabear, home.made, Cinco y Diez, Five and Ten and The National and is followed by a screening of the documentary American Winter (not food-focused but related to Community Connection's mission).
