The space that was The Sultan won't be vacant for long. Beloved local food truck Farm Cart will be taking it over this spring, with breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Saturday. Yes, there will be biscuits. There will also be espresso and beer. Woop! The Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park, at which you can find the cart, gets going for the season this Saturday, Mar. 23 at 8 a.m.
Farther down Baxter Street, D92 Korean BBQ, in the space that was most recently Chonell's, is open for business, with a full-scale range of barbecue at dinner and a lighter lunch menu (bibimbap, bulgogi, some hearty stews), both with copious pan chan (the array of snackies that come complimentary at most Korean restaurants). It's open for lunch and dinner every day.
Also open after a long construction period is Burgerim, taking over the space that was East West Bistro for a long time, on Broad Street downtown. The Israeli burger franchise offers a wide array of sliders, plus milkshakes and fried chicken.
On the other side of downtown, at Lumpkin and Dougherty, Lumberjaxe, the axe-throwing bar, is also open.
The Epps Bridge area, near Kohl's, is getting a Bruster's, an ice cream franchise that used to exist in front of the AMC Theatre (then the Carmike) at Lexington and Barnett Shoals.
Chops and Hops, in downtown Watkinsville, is opening another location, in downtown Athens, in the space currently known as Whiskey Bent, looking to open in late summer/early fall.
KiKi's Bakeshop's satellite location, at the Piedmont Oconee Health Campus, is open for business, with a grand opening celebration planned for Thursday, Mar. 21 with tastings and samples.
Also some sad news: Big Family Cafe, one of the best breakfast and brunch options in town, has closed up shop in the Homewood Hills shopping center. Insert many crying emojis.
