If you're all fired up about canning after reading this week's Locavore, you should know that one-time Athenian Liana Krissoff will be signing the new (and expanded) edition of her book Canning for a New Generation: Bold, Fresh Flavors for the Modern Pantry today (Aug. 25) at 6:30 p.m. at Avid Bookshop, along with photographer Rinne Allen.
Looking farther ahead, chef John Currence of Oxford, MS, will sign copies of his new book Big Bad Breakfast (named after one of his restaurants, which is named after a Larry Brown novel and serves just that) at an event organized by Avid and Five & Ten (and held at the latter) on Sept. 28 from 5–7 p.m. RSVP to 706-546-7300. There will be snacks and a cash bar.
And Joel Penn of Heirloom Cafe will do a chef demo at 10 a.m. at the Sept. 24 Athens Farmers Market, while Juanina Kocher will sign copies of her book "Classic City Cooking." Avid will be on hand selling books.
Athens Land Trust will hold its annual benefit Harvest Moon Dinner on Sept. 17 from 6–9 p.m. Mimi Maumus of home.made is the chef on hand, crafting many courses. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased online, at the ALT office on Pope Street or by calling 706-613-0122.
Terrapin's 7th annual charity chili cook-off is Sept. 9 from 4:30–7:30 p.m. Ticket details are at the Facebook event here.
