Twilight weekend means it's time for the Good Food Block Party, set for Saturday, Apr. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Farm 255's patio. Entry is free, but food is purchased via tickets sold in $1 denominations, and the prices of dishes vary (but all are fairly low). This year's vendors are Farm 255, The National, Five and Ten, Last Resort, The Branded Butcher, Heirloom Cafe, The Savory Spoon, Harry's Pig Shop and 3 Porch Farm. Proceeds benefit Wholesome Wave Georgia and the Athens Farmers Market SNAP doubling program.
Looking ahead a little farther, May 4 will bring a Food Truck Rodeo at Oconee County's Specialty Ornamentals. Farm Cart, Streets Cafe, Jittery Joe's, King of Pops, The Granary and Gigi's Cupcakes will be on hand, as will some trucks from Atlanta, including Skillet and Spurs and Nana G’s Chicken and Waffles. The event has its own Facebook page and will take place from 3 to 7 p.m., with live music, kids' activities and more.
Also May 4 is Mule Day at Shields Ethridge Farm in Jefferson, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children, and include a bbq plate as well as your chance to see old-timey plowing demonstrations, entry to the farm and wagon rides.
And the West Broad Farmers Market kicks off the same day at 10 a.m. This year it will run May through December, on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., plus every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. (produce only). Debit and EBT are an option, and the latter is doubled. This first market of the season also includes a DJ, pony rides, a cooking demo and more.
