After about a month with the Four Coursemen's Eddie Russell running the kitchen, on a temporary basis, Heirloom Cafe and Fresh Market has a new official full-time chef: Jackie Burton, formerly of home.made Catering, 5 & 10 and Farm 255.
Russell is working on some other Athens projects, which he's keeping under wraps for now, but look for his cooking to pop up elsewhere. Heirloom also successfully applied for a full liquor license, so cocktails are coming in the new year.
Over at 5 & 10, Jason Zygmont is taking the reins from Kyle Jacovino, who will be heading down to Savannah to work at Hugh Acheson's The Florence there. Zygmont has worked with Rene Redzepi of Noma and Thomas Keller of Per Se, two of the finest chefs in the world, as well as closer to home with Linton Hopkins and Kevin Gillespie in Atlanta.
And finally, B.J. Bracewell has left East West (a cost-cutting move by new ownership?) to take over cheffing at the Rooftop at the Georgia Theatre. Update: Oy vey. I did not mean to open such a can of worms with a bit of idle speculation about why Bracewell might have left a job of many years for what feels, from the outside, like a lateral move. Flagpole has received several messages defending him as a chef, and I want to clarify that this post was in no way a commentary on his kitchen skills.
