For four years, Bowen Craig has worked with Kelly Codling, of Kelly's Jamaican restaurant, on a book, and it's finally out, this July 4. True Believer: The Journey of Kelly Codling includes Codling's life story but also (and this is the part where your ears will prick up) recipes.
The Lumpkin Street branch of the restaurant will host a release party Wednesday from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., with copies of the book on sale for $15 and some food (although not the full menu). The restaurant has been open for 19 years, which is a long dang time.
If you're looking for somewhere to eat tomorrow, you may have a tough time. Many restaurants in the area tend to be closed, not just on the Fourth but often for the week around it. Call ahead anywhere you might be thinking of going. Heirloom Cafe, in Boulevard, will be open for brunch from 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. (but closed for dinner), Buvez is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Normal Bar and Automatic are keeping regular hours.
The Redfearn Grille at the Holiday Inn downtown is no longer serving its lunch buffet, except for on Sundays, when it runs from 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. It will maintain its tradition of being open on holidays.
To compensate for the loss of the Five Points Waffle House, ADD Drug's counter will now open at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday, giving locals a place to gab over bacon and eggs.
