Openings and more
Been driving past the new downtown parking deck, waiting for its array of franchise establishments on the ground floor to be complete? Well, the last piece of the puzzle just got put in place with the opening of Momma Goldberg's Deli, out of Auburn, AL. So far, its locations are limited to Alabama, Georgia and Florida, and its menu mainly consists of sandwiches, plus soups and salads, which seems to be the definition of "deli" these days.
Also open is the second location in the area of Dickey's Barbecue Pit, where Allen's used to be on Hawthorne, near the intersection with Oglethorpe. I wasn't too impressed with its meats when I went to the Watkinsville branch, but it does have free ice cream.
The former UPS Store in the Kroger shopping center on the Eastside will be renovated into a Jimmy John's, provided plans are approved, and no doubt you already know about the Fresh Market coming to what was the Borders in Beechwood (yay!).
Did you know, however, that I was wrong about Hubee D's not serving alcohol? The chicken place has PBR on tap and wine for $4, should you need a chardonnay with your chicken fingers. They also promise a craft beer, likely Terrapin, coming soon.
The Local Jam has added dinner hours (open every day until 8 p.m.), with a menu that includes fried green tomato sliders, meatloaf, cabbage rolls and shrimp and grits. Most entrees are a mere $8, including one side and bread. The restaurant still doesn't serve alcohol, but its location across the street from Five Points Bottle has led it to offer a mere $2 corkage fee if you want to bring your own, a serious bargain.
