Athens loses a local light.
According to Milton Leathers, who wrote a full and engaging obituary, Cecilia Villaveces, famous for her cakes, passed away Friday. Cecilia only required one name for everyone in town to identify her, and knowing "Cecilia cakes" would be present at a event was often all people needed to know to show up. Born in Colombia, she relocated to the United States in the 1980s, ending up in Athens, where she built her bakery business into an institution, present at life events from christenings to weddings to funerals. She was also famous locally for her tile mosaics, which were highlighted on home tours. Her family has carried on the good work, expanding into the empanada trade (at the farmers' market and elsewhere around town) and maintaining her eponymous bakery. She will be missed.
