Culinary interest can sometimes be found in unexpected places, such as near the register at convenience and drug stores. After a recent lunch at ADD Drug's counter (always a pleasure and one of the best values in town), I spied a display of Shuck-o-Lates as I paid. Packaged in a long sleeve like trail mix, they're chocolate-covered corn kernels, something that sounded weird and unappealing. But the woman punching in the numbers assured me that they were tasty, so I bit. Turns out, she was right. Most likely parboiled in some way, the kernels are neither as hard as cancha nor as soft as fully cooked corn, and while they pale in comparison to the primal deliciousness of M&Ms, they're better than a mere novelty.
