Latin American-Asian fusion franchise Taqueria Tsunami is open as of Monday, in the new Epps Bridge Parkway development. The restaurant only has two other locations, in Marietta and Woodstock, GA, and, lest you find its name offensive, declares that it's committed to donating to tsunami relief organizations. The menu includes such items as empanada bites, Asian nachos, Shanghai shrimp salad, rice bowls, quesadillas and s'mores egg rolls (!), as well as a long list of tacos that do, indeed, combine influences from East and West.
The Pastures of Rose Creek Farm, in Watkinsville, has started a farm stand on Sundays from 2–4 p.m. to sell eggs and beef. You can also order the stuff through Athens Locally Grown, but the stand helps fill the void before market season starts up again.
Food events continue to proliferate, like so many seedlings in the warming earth (including Heirloom Café's Wild Heaven beer dinner March 18). Two are scheduled for March 29:
Spring on the Farm, at 3 Porch Farm, a tour and sustainable plant sale from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. with food by home.made catering, music, crafts and a Double Dutch printing demo (the link includes the address)…
And the annual Tour of Kitchens, benefiting the Georgia Children's Chorus, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. and centered in Boulevard and Cobbham. Tickets are $20 early, $25 at the door. Chefs from Marti's at Midday, Phickles Pickles and Lindsay's Culinary Market will contribute tastes, and the kiddos will sing at noon on the lawn of Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church. A list of participants is available on the website.
Looking ahead a bit:
Casa de Amistad, the nonprofit that benefits the local Hispanic immigrant community through social services, referrals, translation, education and advocacy, is holding a Latin-themed cook-off April 5 from 1–4 p.m. at Milledge Avenue Baptist as a fundraiser that will result in a cookbook. To learn more or buy tickets, contact Alex Borges at [email protected].
George's Lowcountry Table is offering free pimento cheese sandwiches at the bar during Masters play (starting the week of April 7), so you may be motivated to suck it up and pretend you like golf.
The 19th Classic City Brewfest is slated for April 13 from 2:30–6 p.m. at the Melting Point/Foundry Park Inn. The event is also looking for volunteers (details on the website).
Finally, the James Beard Foundation Awards' long list of semifinalists is out, and, once again, Athenian Steve Grubbs, who does the wine for Five & Ten, is on it for "Outstanding Wine Program." High five (and ten)!
