Long in the works, Athens Eats: Recipes from the Classic City has just been published by AIDS Athens as a benefit to raise money for the organization. Full disclosure: I wrote the foreword. Full of recipes from local chefs and gifted amateur cooks (e.g., Peter Dale, Hugh Acheson, Jaamy Zarnegar, Mark Richt, Vince and Barbara Dooley), it sells for $20, and you can buy it on the website, at Aurum or at home.made.
Coming at the local cookbook project from a slightly different angle is Juanina Kocher's Classic City Cooking, which is available for pre-order exclusively through Avid Bookshop. The list price is $29.95, and the book is hardcover, with lots of high-quality color photography.
It focuses on recipes from 14 local restaurants (Five & Ten, The Branded Butcher, Chops & Hops, DePalmas, Heirloom Cafe, home.made, Last Resort, Mama’s Boy, The National, The Pine, The Royal Peasant, Seabear, Speakeasy and Viva! Argentine Cuisine), with an honorable mentions section that can serve as a dining guide.
Kocher is a UGA alum who lives in New York but tries to come back to Athens as often as she can. She's in the middle of planning an official launch event for the book for later in the year.
