But still open for now.
After seeing Dexter Weaver's Facebook post earlier today stating that the beloved Athens institution (and James Beard-recognized America's Classic) is on the block, I called over to get the story from the man himself. Weaver answered the phone right away, as he is wont to do, and confirmed that it's true. After a previous scare in October, the restaurant received a lot of press and a line of customers it hadn't seen in a while, but that kind of publicity didn't last, and Weaver went back to making $300 or $400 a day, not enough to pay the bills and stay open. What he hopes is that someone will buy the business and let him lease it back, which would be the ideal situation and not deprive Athens of his amazing squash casserole.
Surely someone with cash on hand must love his food enough to step forth and keep the rest of us happy. For the moment, the restaurant is still operating as usual, but we'll let you know if that changes.
