Since its inception, Jared Collins' k i d s project has become less of an enigma, solidifying into something sleek and sure. This doesn't mean it's any less exciting; with each release—and there are lots of them—the group, which finally features a steady cast of charaters thanks to Velocirapture's unforeseen but brilliant assignment as Collins' backing band, continues to hone its sound in unexpected ways.
If you missed out, like most Athenians, on buying tickets for Neutral Milk Hotel's first two announced 40 Watt shows on Oct. 22 and 23, and also whiffed, like most Athenians, on procuring tix for the last-minute, locals-only gig on Oct. 24, here's another, more promising glimmer of hope: a new slew of tourdates has been announced, including a stop at Atlanta's Tabernacle on Saturday, Oct. 26. Half Japanese will open.
From Sept. 5-7, the Hopscotch Music Festival will take over downtown Raleigh, NC and feature an impressive list of performers, from Big Boi, The Breeders and Spiritualized to Merzbow, Angel Olsen and Waxahatchee. In advance of the fest, organizers have scheduled a run of "road shows," concerts set across the South and featuring North Carolina-based bands.
On Saturday, June 1, the 40 Watt Club will host a Hopscotch Road Show featuring NC groups Floating Action, Toddlers and Lonnie Walker. Local punks Muuy Biien will rep the home state, as will upstart hip hop producer murk daddy flex, the multiple Flagpole Award nominee who's also playing Flagpole's AthFest showcase, and DJ Daffy Duck.
Find more details on the Hopscotch site.
We've told you about a lot of the bands that will be playing AthFest. Now, we're proud to announce the lineup for Flagpole's official two-night showcase at the Georgia Theatre.

While it starts with an aggressively strummed guitar and staccato drum stomp, this track soon melts into a dreamy sway and back again. The gentle lulls in this tune are my favorite soundtrack for breaks from the action of life this spring as I ponder how gorgeously lush Pulaski Street is these days (is it like this every spring?) or enjoy a dusky porch beer with friends. I could go on bitching about the persistent rain at the Shaky Knees Music Festival this weekend, but that would be wrong. The downpour saved me from getting atrocious tan lines, it prevented me from even bothering to wear makeup and it kept the crowd much less sweaty than the average cluster of bodies on a Georgian Cinco de Mayo. Left and right, people were joyously gliding through the mud, splashing in the brackish puddles and drinking from open cups with no interest in what the rain did to their alcohol.

Before I stepped into the mud among several thousand committed fans, I was a little disappointed that the inaugural Shaky Knees festival was being so torrentially rained on. Driving into Atlanta was, of course, especially hellish in the slosh of stop-and-go traffic. Wearing my most substantial rain gear and excited for a weekend of shows by some of my favorite artists, I was determined not to be a poor sport. That seemed the general sentiment of the crowd members, who were playfully skating through the thick mud and doing rain dances.
The Broad River Watershed Association Benefit concert, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sunday, May 5 at the Broad River Outpost, has been postponed due to inclement weather. Organizers plan to reschedule the event, which was set to feature local bands Future Ape Tapes, Sea of Dogs, Jacob Morris, Bubbly Mommy Gun, Casper and the Cookies and more.
We'll update with details when they become available.
