Nana Grizol

Local label Arrowhawk Records announced a new album by folk punk sweethearts Nana Grizol today called South Somewhere Else. Seventeen years in, songwriter Theo Hilton—who moved from Athens to New Orleans in 2016—uses the band’s fourth album to explore ideas pertaining to the Southern queer experience, activism and allyship, and complicated histories of place. Alongside local musicians Matte Cathcart (drums), Jared Gandy (guitar, bass) and Robbie Cucchiaro (trumpet, euphonium), Hilton collaborates with Sherri Miller and BZ Gibbs of Defiance, Ohio and Kym Register of Loamlands.

The album is Arrowhawk Records biggest (and therefore riskiest) release to date, but everyone involved felt driven to bring listeners some comfort and joy during these strange times. Arrowhawk Records and Don Giovanni will release South Somewhere Else on June 19 by way of CD, standard black vinyl and digital formats, with other fun options available like random rainbow vinyl for indie record stores, an exclusive color for direct-to-consumer purchases, and limited edition bundles that include a tote, sticker and postcard. If everything goes according to plan, Nana Grizol will tour the east and west coasts this summer with support from Nihilist Cheerleader, Wizard Apprentice, ManDate and TAYLOR ALXNDR. Lyrics:

To imagine what’s to come, not trapped by definition, a future version of yourself, choosing your intentions

Crackling, the radio sings

I’ve got a mouth all full of answers though I never knew anything

But there’s something, I can see you’re unsure

You can fall in love, you can believe in justice and they say you’re so immature

To imagine what’s to come, not trapped by definition, a future version of yourself, choosing your intentions

Sweet one, don’t you know that it’s there

A light that shines you felt a thousand times between blank and bothered stares

It’s not simple, not a path you could find

But your feeling heart and warm concern will prove your greatest strengths in time
