Cute looks, charm, and a set of killer pipes placed Jayme Dee apart from other YouTube acts and launched her career with Universal Republic. While other acts on YouTube possess these same basic characteristics, most become lost in the drab recesses of the web, populating those areas people stumble over only by accident.
So what is it that sparks the world’s infatuation with a singer? A lot of times, it’s covering a song of an already-popular artist. Not only does it make the song more likely to emerge on an unsuspecting listener’s radar, but it also creates an immediate connection because of the simple aspect of familiarity.
Sam Burchfield, a local artist, is attempting to take YouTube by storm through utilizing these very connections with his audience. With several YouTube videos under his belt that have accumulated almost 50,000 views, Burchfield decided to cover Jayme Dee’s song “Tip Toes” on a whim. All of this was done in an attempt to pass the video along from person to person until it reached Jayme—the ultimate goal was to get her to perform it with him. Describing it as “one of those things that just happened,” he was shocked and pleased when this impulsive afternoon turned into over 1,300 views in a little over two weeks.
Burchfield took a simple cover to new levels, though, when he flipped the lyrics so he could “sing it about Jayme Dee, since the lyrics worked.” That locked the video into a unique aspect, but it also allowed him to do something he enjoyed and “something that people hadn’t seen before.”
With YouTube becoming such a decisive factor in creating Internet superstars, many believe these occurrences are rare acts that only happen if stars align. Burchfield takes a different view, realizing that while “there’s a sense of luck to it, it also fires me up to try to do better.” Burchfield has gotten a surprising response from viewers. Even more, he’s gotten feedback from Jayme Dee via Twitter that his video was “so incredibly awesome.” And this week, she shared the video on her Facebook page.
Perhaps Sam Burchfield is the next YouTube sensation, and one day he’ll be “a self-sustained artist with [his] own music that will have people cover [his] songs.” Taking advantage of YouTube is an increasingly popular means of becoming an accepted artist, and Burchfield is on his way to recognition—with a little help from Jayme Dee.
