A tauntaun is no longer necessary to get around Athens.

The worst of the Icepocalypse passed about 30 miles south of us, and Athens is starting to thaw out, but Athens-Clarke County officials are still urging people to stay off the roads and be careful when walking.

Crews with graders and sand trucks will be working continuously through Friday afternoon to clear the main roads, but ACC doesn't have the resources to get to neighborhood streets. Many roads remain icy and hazardous, according to the ACC Transportation and Public Works Department.

The temperature is expected to dip below freezing tonight, so any moisture on the roads could turn into black ice.

Police also warned pedestrians that large chunks of ice are falling off rooftops. The sidewalk in front of University Tower on East Broad Street is closed because of falling ice.

In other news, the Red Cross emergency shelter at Clarke Central High School, which housed some homeless people who couldn't find other shelter beds last night, is closing at 4 p.m.
