Welcome to Athens Power Rankings. In the spirit of sports rating systems, through painstaking analysis, we rank the top movers and shakers in the Classic City each week. Who's hot? Who's not? Find out below.
1. Nancy Denson
Should we just go ahead and crown Nancy empress for life? She's got a staggering $85,000 in her campaign coffers already, and pretty much the whole city has endorsed her.
2. Jason Carter
The state senator and likely Democratic nominee for governor drew a record crowd to a Clarke County party fundraiser last week.
3. Keith Heard
The former Athens state representative is taking on Republican Ralph "The Obamacare Obstructor" Hudgens for insurance commissioner. If Carter and presumptive Senate candidate Michelle Nunn at least keep it close at the top of the ticket, this might be Democrats' best chance to pick off a down-ballot race.
4. New Madrid
With New West Records behind them, the 2013 Flagpole Band of the Year could be the next Athens rockers to take the world by storm.
5. Kelly Girtz
Pulaski pedestrians will have Girtz to thank if they ever get sidewalks or traffic-calming measures.
