Welcome to Athens Power Rankings. In the spirit of sports rating systems, through painstaking analysis, we rank the top movers and shakers in the Classic City each week. Who's hot? Who's not? Find out below.

1. Devon Gales

The Southern University wide receiver suffered a broken neck during a loss to Georgia on Saturday. He underwent surgery at Athens Regional Medical Center and, according to Southern, is able to move his upper body, so that’s a relief. UGA paid to fly Gales’ family from Louisiana to Athens to be with him, and Coach Mark Richt said he may call on Bulldog fans to provide financial support as well. Flagpole joins the rest of the Athens community in wishing Gales a swift and full recovery.

Let this also be a reminder that when top-tier schools like UGA pay lesser opponents vast sums of money ($650,000 in this case) to beat up on them, people can get hurt.

Now, to cheer you up, here’s a video of Southern’s incredible band, the Human Jukebox, performing at halftime.

2. Kristin Hersh

The ex-Throwing Muses leader makes the list for the second week in a row. She kicks off a tour to promote her Vic Chesnutt biography, Don’t Suck, Don’t Die: Giving Up Vic Chesnutt, Thursday at the 40 Watt.

4. Brian Kemp

The Georgia Secretary of State’s “SEC primary” recently brought Jeb Bush to Athens, and rumor is Marco Rubio might show up for the Georgia-Alabama game this weekend.

5. Jack Cherry

Threats & Promises scribe Gordon Lamb calls Cherry’s, aka Juan de Fuca’s, EP Cavern Of a “stunning, gorgeous, deeply felt and incredibly rendered tribute to a lost friend.”
