Athens Rising Special Edition

A new Kroger is coming to East Athens, and updates on a homeless resource center, The World Famous and Laser Car Wash.

Plans have been filed for a 123,500 square-foot Kroger and six out-buildings on 28 acres at the intersection of U.S. Highway 29 and Hull Road. They're scheduled to go to the Athens-Clarke Planning Commission on Dec. 10. Here's a PDF of the site plan.

At the same meeting, the planning commission will also consider ARCH Village, a daycare, shelter, transitional housing and community center for homeless people on Bray Street. The "one-stop shop" is funded by the University of Georgia as part of its agreement to take over the Navy school for the health sciences campus.

In other development news, Normal Bar owner Bain Mattox has applied for a permit for The World Famous, his new Hull Street music venue, and Caledonia Lounge applied to build a deck and move an Airstream trailer onto the property. (UPDATE: Music Editor Gabe Vodicka says the trailer's been there for a while. They must have gotten in trouble.)

Near Five Points, Laser Car Wash owner Mushtaq Pasha applied for a permit to fulfill his dream of opening an international grocery store, First Class Groceries. Planners will review those applications on Wednesday.
