Under fire for calling the Big Bang and evolution "lies straight from the pit of Hell" at a Hartwell Baptist church last month, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, is laying low. From the Wall Street Journal:
Mr. Broun’s spokeswoman, Meredith Griffanti, didn’t return calls for comment. Mr. Broun’s office was closed for Columbus Day and its voicemail box was full. The video of Mr. Broun’s remarks has been removed from the Liberty Baptist Church website and the church’s pastor, Michael Griffin Sr., didn’t return calls for comment. The remarks, however, are now widely available across the web, including on YouTube.
Bill Nye the Science Guy says Broun isn't fit to serve on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology (an assignment he shares with Rep. Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin, R-MO).
"Since the economic future of the United States depends on our tradition of technological innovation, Representative Broun's views are not in the national interest," Nye told The Huffington Post in an email. "For example, the Earth is simply not 9,000 years old," he continued, contradicting a remark made by Broun later in the video. "He is, by any measure, unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology."
Libertarian radio blowhard Neal Boortz also piled on, tweeting "Attn. Congressman Paul Broun. Please resign from Republican Party as soon as possible. You aren't helping," and "Voters in Paul Broun's Congressional District (Ga. 10) should write in Charles Darwin on the ballot this year."
And finally, one John Snyder of Fresno, CA has started an online petition to boot Broun off the science committee.
