U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens. is staying busy doing God's work of repealing the 20th Century.
On Friday, Broun and fellow members of the Republican Study Committee, the GOP's conservative caucus, introduced legislation to turn six food welfare programs—including food stamps, aid for mothers, children and seniors—into block grants to states. The bill would also cut funding to pre-2008 levels and require recipients to work (already a requirement for cash welfare). The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a.k.a. SNAP, a.k.a. food stamps, would be cut by two-thirds. "If liberals are correct that the nation is better off now than four years ago, then returning to spending levels of four years ago should not be a problem,” the sponsors said in a news release.
The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste named Broun a "taxpayer hero" today. He voted 95 percent of the time to cut spending, according to the watchdog group. In particular, CCAGW cited Broun's votes to cut the $1.2 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter alternate engine program (maybe the only time he ever agreed with President Obama) and $250 million from the Department of Energy's weatherization program that gives grants to low-income homeowners to make their houses more energy-efficient (locally administered by ACTION Inc.).
Broun might be a skinflint when it comes to taxpayer money, but his campaign committee... not so much. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington recently named Broun one of the 20 most corrupt congressmen, alleging he illegally concealed the source and terms of loans to his campaign, then wouldn't come clean about it. CREW complained to the Federal Elections Commission, and an investigation is pending.
