Clarke County school board members Vernon Payne and Denise Spangler spoke out against the charter school amendment at a forum on Tuesday. But now, the full board has come out against it. They unanimously passed a resolution opposing the Nov. 6 ballot measure at their Thursday night meeting.
The amendment would allow a state-appointed board to create charter schools, in addition to local school districts, which critics fear will suck money from public school coffers. Here's the text of the resolution:
NOW BE IT RESOLVED, that on this (11th) day of October, 2012, the Clarke County Board of Education requests that the Governor and state legislators commit their support to adequately fund a quality K-12 public education for students in Clarke County Schools and across the State of Georgia; to acknowledge the traditional and locally-approve charter schools that have offered quality choice and outstanding performance; to support the system currently in place for appealing and funding locally-denied charter schools and to effectively focus on public policy that results in high performing schools throughout the state of Georgia in lieu of a Constitutional Amendment.
NOW BE IT RESOLVED, that the Clarke County School Board hereby requests that no authority other than local school boards have the responsibility to oversee public education in their school district communities.
NOW BE IT RESOLVED, that the Clarke County Board of Education authorizes and directs the Superintendent to send an official copy of this resolution to the Governor, appropriate state representatives and senators, the State Board of Education, and the Georgia Department of Education.
Five conservative activists filed a lawsuit recently seeking to stop local school boards from publicly opposing the amendment, but it seems to be going nowhere in court.
