Crossing Over

A top Democrat tells party members to vote in the Republican primary.

Clarke County Democratic Committee Chairman Joe Wisenbaker is urging Democrats who live outside of House District 118 to pull a Republican primary ballot.

District 118, where Spencer Frye is challenging Rep. Keith Heard, D-Athens, is the only Democratic primary in Athens. Other local congressional and legislative seats are either uncontested or feature only Republican candidates.

"While the Democratic Party has taken hits for not fielding contestants in those races, the real issue is that reapportionment has turned them into virtually guaranteed Republican seats," Wisenbaker said in an email to party members Sunday.

In particular, Wisenbaker urged Democrats to vote in the GOP races for state House District 117 between Rep. Doug McKillip, R-Athens, and Regina Quick, and the 10th Congressional District race between U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, and Stephen Simpson. Contrary to popular belief, Georgians don't register their party affiliation and can vote in either party's primary.

"... I do have an opportunity to vote my conscience with respect to both Paul Broun and Doug McKillip," he said. "As folks that have strong Democratic leanings, you probably feel the same way that I do about those two individuals. Let's take the opportunity afforded us by Georgia's open primary system and see if our collective voices may, at least, help remove two of the most egregiously misrepresentative politicians in our state."

Wisenbaker said he was speaking for himself and not on behalf of he party.
