A 200-year-old abandoned cotton mill off Macon Highway was destroyed in a fire Thursday night.
According to 11 Alive, the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department responded to a 6:19 p.m. call about the fire within five minutes, but parts of the building had already collapsed, and firefighters could only work to contain it while it burned itself out overnight. Officials closed Old Macon Highway while the fire blazed.
Neighbors lamented that the old mill could have been repurposed had it not burned down, WSB reported.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
