Is Icepocalypse III: The Icepocalypsing coming to Athens? Probably not.
Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in 15 Georgia counties last night, but Clarke is not among them. Nor is Clarke under a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service.
According to the Athens, GA Weather website (run by UGA atmospheric sciences graduate Matt Daniel), Athens is likely to see a mix of sleet and rain this afternoon, switching over to all rain tonight. Moisture on the roads will probably freeze overnight, leading to black ice Tuesday morning, and possibly Wednesday morning as well.
It all depends on how cold it gets. Right now, Athens, GA Weather is predicting that the temperature won't drop below freezing while it's raining. But if it's a couple of degrees colder than predicted, we could get sleet or freezing rain. (Snow is unlikely.)
After the precipitation stops, tomorrow morning's predicted low is 31. Moisture on the roads will probably freeze overnight, leading to black ice Tuesday morning, and possibly Wednesday morning as well.
