U.S. Rep. Paul Broun (R-Athens) is the 196th most conservative House member out of 435, according to the National Journal, a conservative political magazine.
Broun is more liberal than 35 percent of congressmen on economic issues, 42 percent on social issues and 44 percent on foreign policy.
That's the lowest ranking of any Republican member of Georgia's delegation. Rep. Doug Collins (R-Gainesville) is the most conservative, ranking 16th. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) is 23rd and Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Savannah) is 17th. Like Broun, Gingrey and Kingston are running for Senate.
Something seems fishy about these rankings, though. Broun and another Georgia tea partier, Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ranger) are generally viewed as very far to the right, yet Graves only ranked 76th. National Journal looked at, categorized and weighted 111 votes but does not say which ones or what was considered a conservative vote.
Correction: The National Journal is nonpartisan. I was thinking of the National Review.
