A press release from Occupy Athens arrived over the weekend:
Occupy Athens, along with the local chapter of the AFL-CIO, will be holding a rally at the UGA Arch in solidarity with Caterpillar workers everywhere protesting their unjust treatment by their own company on Tuesday, September 4 at 5:00 pm. Caterpillar has consistently tried to maximize profits at the expense of workers rights and well being, even during these last few years which have been some of Caterpillar’s best ever financially. With Caterpillar soon opening a plant here in Athens-Clarke County, we feel it is imperative that Caterpillar realize the workers of the world and Athens deserve better.
Occupy Athens is glad that Caterpillar has decided to invest in our beautiful city and able workforce but we will not stand aside and allow our city and workers to be under appreciated or exploited. Last year alone Caterpillar brought in record profits of 4.9 billion dollars and gave a 42% pay increase to its CEO yet cut wages and benefits for a majority of its workers. We stand with the present, and future, workers of Caterpillar and we will fight against corporate greed to ensure their rights are protected.
Members of Occupy Athens, the AFL-CIO, and the greater community will be present at the rally from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information OATH can be contacted via email at [email protected] or phone at 706-389-8099.
