Stay Away from Campus

Expect lots of traffic today as students move in and rush starts at the University of Georgia.

Traffic will be heavy and parking sparse around the University of Georgia for the next few days as 7,000 students and their parents descend on campus for the new school year.

Fraternity and sorority rush starts today and runs through Monday. The official dorm move-in day is Wednesday. UGA and Athens-Clarke police are warning Athens residents to avoid Baxter, Lumpkin, Finley, Hull and Church streets, as well as South Milledge Avenue, due to congestion. On-street parking is blocked off on South Finley and South Church streets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, and the Tate Center parking deck will be closed until 1 p.m. to serve as a staging area for moving into Brumby Hall.

Clarke County K-12 students go back Wednesday, and police are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones and stop to let buses load and unload children.
