Protesters Disrupt Board of Regents Meeting

About 40 protestors disrupted a University System of Georgia Board of Regents meeting in Atlanta today demanding an end to the system’s policy barring undocumented students from attending UGA and other public universities.

According to Freedom University’s Facebook page and other sources, about 20 undocumented students and 20 supporters from UGA, Georgia State and Emory University “linked arms and raised their fists in an expression of student power and solidarity in opposition to Policy 4.1.6.”

Policy 4.1.6 bars undocumented students from attending Georgia public universities with competitive enrollment, including UGA and four others, even though many such students were raised in Georgia and are considered lawful residents under the federal deferred-action program.

Board of Regents policy also requires undocumented students who live in Georgia to pay international tuition rates at open-enrollment schools like the University of North Georgia.
