The last vestige of Athens' mid-aughts Chi-House/math-rock scene, local outfit Cinemechanica lay dormant for two years until an opening slot for Thurston Moore's Chelsea Light Moving brought the group back to the stage in October. The head-spinning, rapid-fire set revealed that the dudes had been busy all along. Armed with a new guitarist and vocalist in Manray's Jordan Olivera (who replaced departing member Andy Pruett), Cinemechanica is reportedly set to begin working on the long-awaited followup to its 2006 LP The Martial Arts. (Technically, the group's most recent release was the 10-inch Rivals single, which emerged in 2010.) The Powder Room, which continues to impress with its low-end-heavy sludge-rock assault, opens Friday's show.
