Pilobolus

With as much energy as its namesake—a phototropic fungus known for propelling its spores with extraordinary speed and strength—the modern dance company Pilobolus performs imaginative and highly athletic choreographic works. Utilizing the human body as a medium for expression, many of the pieces defy anatomical logic through contortions and astonishing poses. Founded by a group of Dartmouth College students in 1971, the Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated company has toured through over 60 countries and made appearances on shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Oprah” and “Sesame Street.” The Athens program will include two pieces envisioned by the company’s associate artistic director and UGA alumnus Matt Kent, one of which was created in collaboration with illusionists Penn and Teller. A free lecture will be held 45 minutes prior to each performance, which are set to begin at 8 p.m. Tickets range between $50 and $60.
