Its members have logged years with prominent local bands like Five Eight and the Kenney-Blackmon String Band, but Klezmer Local 42 ain't your typical Classic City outfit. Drawing primary inspiration from the traditional Eastern European Jewish folk music that is its namesake, the group also incorporates some surprising elements—pop music references; the occasional foray into sea-shanty balladry—to create a vibrant and visceral sound that'll get even the staunchest goy on the dance floor. And don't call 'em poseurs: The latest edition to the ever-expanding collective is rabbi and saxophonist Eric Linder. According to the band, Thursday's show will double as a nightcap for a group of public school teachers in town for a seminar on Holocaust education.
