Watercolor Paintings

California-based duo Watercolor Paintings traffic in the sort of quirky, stripped-down confessionals anyone who went to a house show in the early 2000s will instantly recognize, and some of the familiar DIY signifiers are there: an association with Plan-It-X, bone-dry studio production, a lyrical fascination with personal politics. But siblings Rebecca and Josh Redman aren't content to rely solely on genre tropes, as heard on their most recent outing, When You Move, which incorporates the odd but gorgeous slowcore dirge ("Showers of Stones") and showcases Rebecca's insightful storytelling. Much of the record could be deemed "twee,” based solely on the core instrumentation—harp, ukelele—though shapeshifting songs like "Birds' Wings" prove too deep and dark to fit the mold. Underrated locals El Hollín share the bill and an affinity for the poppier side of folk-punk.
