Once a staple on the DIY circuit, Merrill Garbus wowed house-show crowds with her uniquely tribal, loop-based compositions and otherworldly pipes. The release earlier this year of Nikki Nack, Garbus' third album under the tUnE-yArDs moniker, elevated the project to unforeseen levels of visibility and acclaim. Bay Area resident Garbus has managed the transition from basement to festival stage with the same sense of confidence that informs her music; now armed with a sizable backing band, her booming, percussive pop tunes have taken on new life. The $19 ticket price is worth it just to hear the band plow through the weirdo earworm "Water Fountain," probably my favorite song of 2014.
