For “Athens Arcana: A Contemporary Tarot,” ATHICA invited 78 regional artists to design one card each for a custom deck. It’s based loosely on the traditional Rider-Waite deck, and artists were encouraged to interpret their card’s symbology however they imagined and through whichever medium they preferred. With a tremendous range of styles included, the deck represents a time capsule of the current local arts scene. The opening reception will naturally feature tarot readers as well as costumed performers, and the full collection of original artwork will be on display, with the majority of pieces available for purchase. Decks run $30, with proceeds benefiting future exhibitions and educational programs at the gallery.
