Charles Bradley is the stuff of storybook legend. A onetime James Brown impersonator, handyman and restaurant cook who was "discovered" in his sixth decade by Daptone Records founder Gabriel Roth, the self-described "Screamin' Eagle of Soul" has since released two powerful collections of aching, energetic neo-funk: 2011's pained No Time For Dreaming and 2013's more nuanced Victim of Love. A live performer first and foremost, Bradley cribs onstage from his hero Brown's playbook while injecting a lifetime of complex emotion into each carefully crafted vocal line. His band, made up of capable young players from the Daptone stable, provides a slightly modern-tinged throwback backdrop.
