Part musical collective, part sociopolitical campaign and part environmental organization, The Nile Project brings together musicians from the 11 countries that border the mammoth African river for a cross-cultural experiment in sound and sustainability. Founded by Bay Area residents Mina Girgis, an Egyptian-American music researcher, and Ethiopian-American musician Meklit Hadero, the project has spawned one full-length album, Aswan, and a storm of international support. In addition to the musical component, the Nile Project organizes ecological workshops around the globe and offers leadership programs at universities in the U.S. and East Africa. The 2015 tour stops in Athens Monday, when a group of Nile Project musicians play the Georgia Theatre.
