Emerging from a hardscrabble childhood in Flint, MI, singer-songwriter Whitey Morgan channels pain and frustration through an old-school honky-tonk approach. Along with artists like Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton, Morgan is intent on reviving the sounds of classic country for a new audience. Unlike those musicians, he betrays no ambition of mainstream success. Songs like “Me and the Whiskey” and “Ain’t Gonna Take It Anymore,” from last year’s Sonic Ranch, are bruised and muddy, unapologetically honest tales from a life lived hard. Arizona-based fingerpicker Tony Martinez, who wades in similar musical waters, opens.
