Greenlandic singer-songwriter Nive Nielsen’s output is informed by her Inuit background but heavily indebted to American folk and indie rock sounds. Feet First, Nielsen’s most recent release with her extraordinary backing band, the Deer Children, was recorded in fits and starts at locations all over the globe—including right here in Athens—and features contributions from Howe Gelb, Ralph Carney and other notable names. The record showcases Nielsen’s evolution from ukulele-strumming folkie to fearsome frontperson. On album highlight “Tulugaq,” frosty guitars meld with soaring vocal melodies and an unstoppable drum rhythm to create a singular sound. New Orleans musician Julie Odell opens Friday’s show.
