Brooklyn-via-Boston band Quilt boasts a layered sound, elastic melodies threaded into a rich texture of guitar and organ. But despite the many intricacies in the group’s music, it retains a playful air. This combination of complexity and impishness is usually found in frantic one-man show polymaths like Ariel Pink and Harry Nilsson. The four-piece Quilt, however, takes a collaborative approach that shows in the variety of songs on its latest record, Plaza. The album has a laconic, late-summer vibe—fleetingly sweet, with memories of Rubber Soul and Revolver just at the edge of recollection. “Are you looking for an answer?” the band harmonizes on “O’Connor’s Barn.” Sounds like Quilt might have found it.
