In Michael Lewis’ classic Moneyball, Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane builds a winner on a budget by using advanced statistics to find undervalued players on the scrap heap. In The Gamble: Choice and Chance in the 2012 Presidential Election, political scientists John Sides of George Washington University (who started The Monkey Cage blog) and Lynn Vavreck of the University of California, Los Angeles (a contributor to the New York Times’ The Upshot) take a similar Nate Silver-esque analytical approach to politics. Far from the usual trivial anecdotes or breathless coverage of breaking news that rarely factors into who wins and loses, they’ll explain key data about the fundamentals of the 2016 race at UGA’s Richard B. Russell Library.
