Fred Thomas
Known as the leader of Michigan indie bulwark Saturday Looks Good to Me, singer-songwriter Fred Thomas has recently released two solo efforts, 2015’s All Are Saved and this year’s Changer. Both albums were tracked here in Athens with engineer Drew Vandenberg, and both diverge from Saturday Looks Good to Me’s veiled psych-pop, employing a direct and cathartic approach that draws heavily on Thomas’ personal history. The new record, in particular, acts as a music-lifer’s memoir, displaying influences ranging from pop-punk and electronica to sweeping, E6-style psych-folk. Two fantastic local outfits—Grand Vapids and Arbor Labor Union—share Saturday’s bill.
GRAND VAPIDS Local alt-rock band with a dense, dreamy, slowcore-inspired sound.
FRED THOMAS Singer-songwriter known for his work with indie-pop group Saturday Looks Good to Me. See Calendar Pick on p. 15.
ARBOR LABOR UNION Atlanta/Athens-based band that works with repetitious riffs and post-punk rhythms.
