Willie Cole

Sculptor and conceptual artist Willie Cole is recognized for his ability to transform ordinary objects into visions rich in symbolism and meaning. A graduate of the Art Students League of New York, he draws influence from African-American imagery, Dada readymades and pop culture. His sculpture on view in the museum’s “Expanding Tradition” exhibition is a topsy-turvy stack of white and navy blue high-heeled shoes balanced into the shape of a chicken. During the museum’s annual Alfred Heber Holbrook Memorial Lecture, Cole will speak about “the creative practice as spiritual pursuit,” with connections made between history, religion, the environment and the arts.
