Willie Cole
Sculptor and conceptual artist Willie Cole is recognized for his ability to transform ordinary objects into visions rich in symbolism and meaning. A graduate of the Art Students League of New York, he draws influence from African-American imagery, Dada readymades and pop culture. His sculpture on view in the museum’s “Expanding Tradition” exhibition is a topsy-turvy stack of white and navy blue high-heeled shoes balanced into the shape of a chicken. During the museum’s annual Alfred Heber Holbrook Memorial Lecture, Cole will speak about “the creative practice as spiritual pursuit,” with connections made between history, religion, the environment and the arts.
Atlanta-based artist Willie Colle will speak about the creative practice as spiritual pursuit, focusing on the links he makes among visual arts, music, history, world religion and the environment. See Calendar Pick on p. 20.
